Osteopathy
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a manual medicine that promotes total body health by improving the condition of the muscles, joints and spine. Treatment influences the body’s circulatory, nervous and lymphatic systems.
Osteopathy is a holistic (whole body) approach to health care. Osteopaths don’t just focus on the problem area, but seek to identify the root cause of your pain. When one part of the body is restricted, the rest of the body has to adapt and compensate causing inflammation, stiffness and pain. By removing restrictions in movement and therefore reducing stress on the body, osteopathic treatment minimises pain, and provides the body with the opportunity to heal itself.
What to expect
On your first visit you will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire. In order to form a diagnosis your osteopath will
- Take a detailed history of the presenting complaint
- Observe movements of your spine and rest of your body
- Examine your posture
- Palpate the tissues of your body
- Perform special orthopaedic and medical tests to incriminate specific structures
In order to be examined you will be asked to undress to your underwear. Please either wear modest underwear or you are welcome to bring shorts and a vest top instead.
Having established a diagnosis a variety of hands on techniques will be employed to alleviate your symptoms including
- Manipulation and articulations to improve the movement of your joints
- Massage to reduce muscular tension
- Stretches to improve flexibility
- Techniques to boost circulation and flush wastes products out of your tissues
- Nerve decompressions and stretches to release trapped nerves and enhance nerve supply
